There is an organization out there that will prepare any Ohioan between the ages of 17 and 64 to assist their community in times of crisis. This organization has been around since Ohio became a state in 1803. Its mission is to assist first responders of local communities in times of crisis. It has a command structure, communications, search and rescue training, first aid training, physical security training, traffic control training, and crowd control training. It instills discipline, dedication, and devotion to community, state and country. It is made up of all volunteers that meet once a month to practice the training they get.
After September 11, there was a surge of volunteers who wanted to serve. History was being made. Now that our country seems to have forgotten the tragedy of September 11 and moved on with their self-centered lives, the desire for preparedness has withered as nothing tragic has happened since.
I strongly urge those Americans in Ohio that continue to be aware and conscious of world events to contact the Ohio Military Reserve (Ohio's State Guard). The Ohio State Guard is a military organization that can only be used in Ohio. We are all volunteers and have gotten a high level of training to be able to assist in the event of disasters of any scale.
Most importantly, OHMR teaches each of us to be prepared and protect our families and neighbors. It gives men and women who are looking for something important to do in their lives a chance to make a difference that is meaningful and fulfilling. Do something, now. Help Ohio be prepared.
