by Laura Freeman Reporter Columbus -- Ohio House of Representative Republicans have appointed Hudson resident Richard Nero to fill the District 42 seat vacated by John Widowfield in May. "Nero emerged from the Republican primary as the leading candidate, and when the seat became open, he was clearly the candidate for the seat," said Jon Husted, a spokesperson for Speaker of the House. Nero won the Republican Party's nomination for the District 42 seat in the March primary and will face Democrat Mike Moran, Hudson City Council president, in the November election. Husted and the House Republican caucus chose Nero after two weeks of considerations and officially appointed him June 10. Nero, accompanied by his family, took the oath of office for state representative in the House that day. "Our district is in need of leadership and representation in the Ohio House," Nero said in a press release. "As an individual who has served in many leadership roles both during my time at Kent State University and throughout my 15-year career as an education, health care and public policy expert, I'm prepared to represent the 42nd Ohio House District in the professional and visible manner it deserves." Nero did not return phone messages and e-mails seeking additional comment. Nero, 37, is a consultant for a California software and technology company. He has not previously held an elected office. Widowfield resigned his seat May 28 after news reports suggested he purchased Ohio State University football tickets using campaign funds and profited by reselling them. The 42nd District represents Hudson, Silver Lake, Cuyahoga Falls, Munroe Falls and Stow. Moran said Nero's appointment does not change anything for the fall election. "I've represented citizens for 2 1/2 years and have been actively involved," Moran said. "I'll be an actively involved state representative." Moran said because the House is on recess all summer, Nero will have little time in the seat. "He had one day to represent the district and vote," Moran said. "He left early and missed the vote on the Great Lakes water compact. It's a major issue, and our state has been the holdout." E-mail: lfreeman@recordpub.com Phone: 330-688-0088 ext. 3150 Comments
