The Akron Symphony Orchestra will present six free concerts throughout the greater Akron area, including stops in Green and Wadsworth, as part of its annual Picnic Pops series this summer. The outdoor concerts will run June 23 through July 11 and sample some of the very best in American popular music, from the epic film scores of Star Wars and Indiana Jones to a tribute to the music of composer Irving Berlin. Audiences will also be treated to a selection of patriotic favorites such as Armed Forces Salute, Stars and Stripes, and 1812 Overture as well as great marches from Sousa and Fillmore. Highlights from last season's new work, Rockwell Reflections by Stella Sung, will also be performed. All Akron Symphony summer concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. Akron Symphony music director Christopher Wilkins and Associate conductor Christopher Lees will share conducting duties throughout the series. In the event of rain, all concerts have an alternative date or location scheduled. All concerts are open and free to the public due to the sponsorship of the cities of Akron, Wadsworth, and Green. Special program with singer Helen Welch In addition to the parks concerts, the Akron Symphony will present a special one night only celebration of music from the Great American Songbook at Lock 3 on July 6 featuring jazz singer Helen Welch. Welch will perform several sets with the orchestra, including such classics as "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Days of Wine and Roses," "Moon River," and "When I Fall in Love." Akron Symphony board president honored In a show of gratitude for his years of leadership and service, immediate past president of the board of trustees for the Akron Symphony George H. Rosin, has been invited by Music Director Christopher Wilkins to play trombone at the Hardesty Park concert on June 23.
