Tennis team wins

The visiting Hudson junior varsity team improved to 7-3 with a 3-2 victory over Hunting Valley University April 29. Adam Howe won a 6-1, 6-3 decision at third singles and the Explorers' doubles teams of James Nutt and Yatin Mirakhur (6-4, 6-3) and Patrick Ohanian and Kevin Caldwell (4-6, 6-4, 6-3) also triumphed.

On April 26, Hudson placed first at the Shaker Heights Doubles Tournament. The Flight 3 team of Ohanian and Caldwell and the Flight 4 team of Michael Kudlaty and Sajjan Patel placed first. The Flight 2 team of Nutt and Adam Howe took second and the Flight 1 team of Alex DeCarlo and Connor Tomich finished third.

The visiting Explorers posted a 5-0 win at Cuyahoga Falls April 24. DeCarlo (6-0, 6-1), Howe (6-3, 6-1) and Patel (6-2, 6-0) cruised and the doubles teams of Nutt and Matt DeMauro (6-3, 6-3) and Ohanian and Caldwell (6-0, 6-0) also triumphed.

Duo helps CVCA

The host CVCA baseball team cruised to a 14-4 victory over Principals Athletic Conference rival Tuscarawas Valley May 1. Hudson resident Matt Corpora had a double, a run batted in and a run scored for CVCA (12-4, 7-1). Alex Mosteller of Hudson also drove in a run and scored a run for CVCA.

Rocchi places second

Hudson resident Linda Rocchi, 53, placed second in the female 50-through-59 age group and 60th overall with a time of 29 minutes, 36.9 seconds at the Diversity Center's 5K race May 3 in Cleveland.

Hahn leads KSU

The Kent State men's golf team placed second at the Mid-American Conference Championships with a four-round total of 1,172 strokes to finish one stroke behind Eastern Michigan, which won its second straight team title.

Freshman John Hahn, a Hudson graduate who was named the MAC Player and Freshman of the Year, led four players in the top 10 for the Golden Flashes after firing a 2-under 70 that included six birdies Sunday. Hahn earned his fifth straight top 10 finish with a 1-over 289 (74-73-72-70) that placed him third overall. He also received first-team and all-tournament honors.

Kent State earned a 12-shot victory at the FirstEnergy Intercollegiate recently. The Golden Flashes compiled a 12-over 712 (350-362) in a play-six, count-five format at the par-70, 6,936 yard Windmill Lakes Golf Club. Hahn started his day at 4-under after 10 holes before finishing round one with a 1-under 69 for his third straight round in the 60s.

He brought his round back to even par with back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17 before another bogey on 18 gave him a one-over 71 and an even par 140 (69-71) for the tournament.

Track teams fare well

The Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy girls track and field team placed fifth with 56.25 points at the 28th Optimist Meet at Austintown Fitch High School.

Twinsburg won the competition with 80.25 points. Rounding out the top four were Hudson (74), North Canton Hoover (73.5) and Canton GlenOak (69).

Hudson resident Irene Frangos was a member of the sixth-place 1,600-meter relay team (4 minutes, 26.9 seconds) and the eighth-place 3,200 relay team (10:30.29).

The boys placed sixth out of 26 teams with 35.5 points. Wadsworth won with 98 points and Copley (80) and GlenOak (72.5) finished second and third, respectively.

Kyle Sullinger of Hudson placed second in the 1,600 (4:30.82) and third in the 3,200 (9:28.91).

Mackessy finds net

Hudson graduate Rick Mackessy had two goals and two assists during the Denison (Granville) University men's lacrosse team's 16-12 victory over Ohio Wesleyan May 3.

Tandem guides Walsh

track team

The Walsh Jesuit boys track and field team placed third with 82.5 points at the 14-team Gary Smith Invitational May 3 at Thomas Worthington High School.

Cleveland St. Ignatius won the competition with 145 points and Solon placed second (121).

Hudson residents Jeffrey Sigmund and Jay Young were members of Walsh's 6,400-meter relay team that placed third with a time of 19 minutes, 25.38 seconds.

Net squad loses

to University

The visiting WRA boys tennis team lost a 5-0 decision to University May 1 in Hunting Valley.

The Pioneers were scheduled to entertain Cathedral Prep (Erie, Pa.) May 6. Results were not available at press time.

They are set to host Hudson May 8 at 4:30 p.m. and Gates Mills Hawken May 9 at 4:30 p.m.

Laurel edges WRA

girls lacrosse club

The host WRA girls lacrosse a 12-10 decision to Shaker Heights Laurel May 1. It was the Lady Pioneers (6-5) third straight loss. They were set to visit Gilmour Academy May 5. Results were not available at press time. Reserve is scheduled to host Cleveland Heights May 7 at 5 p.m.

Spittlers win

The Walsh boys tennis team won a 4-1 decision over Cleveland St. Ignatius May 1.

Hudson resident Patrick Spittler won a 6-2, 6-4 decision at third singles and Matt Spittler of Hudson and his partner earned a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win at second doubles for Walsh (9-6).

Fasola gets two hits

The visiting Walsh baseball team won a 12-2 decision over Massillon May 1.

Hudson resident Johnny Fasola had two hits, including a double off the fence for Walsh (14-2). David Starn of Hudson pitched in the sixth inning for Walsh.
