Historic home
featured at meeting

The historic house facing the northwest quadrant of Hudson's Green and the Merino family who have owned it for more than a century will be the topic at the Hudson Heritage Association program at 7:30 p.m. May 8 at Barlow Community Center.

The Baldwin-Buss-Merino house, a high style Greek Revival house, was built in 1825 for Augustus Baldwin, a prosperous early merchant and eldest of the seven sons of Hudson proprietor Stephen Baldwin.

In the last 185 years the house has had only three owners, all of whom have been well-known local businessmen.

John Buss, the house's second owner, had a popular general store almost adjacent to the house which operated until the 1930s.

Born in England, Buss had come to Hudson as a student at Western Reserve College. He became a store owner and served two terms as mayor of Hudson, as a long-time member of council, and as Justice of the Peace for a 12-year term.

His son, Charles H. Buss, inherited the house and business.

In 1907, he sold the house to Charles Merino, who bought the property with his in-laws.

In 1946 Merino and his son, Rich, opened a wine store, which is now on First Street in the First & Main shopping district.

Polly Kurowski, chairman of HHA's survey and research committee, will present the history of the Baldwin-Buss-Merino house that will include some rare photos taken by Stacey Poor in the early 1970s.

The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 when the center of Hudson became a historic district.

Kurowski will be assisted by Tom Vince and Andrew McEachern in the program, and a marker will be presented by HHA President David King to the homeowners.

The program is open to the public.
