Fireworks set to blast offMay 4, 2008
by Laura Freeman Reporter Hudson -- Fireworks will light up the sky July 5 at Barlow Farm Park to help residents celebrate Independence Day. The Hudson Community Foundation sponsors the event, which takes place at dusk. Parking is available at Barlow Farm Park, Oak Grove Park, Little Tikes and Jo-Ann Stores. American Fireworks on Darrow Road will provide the fireworks, expertise and equipment. The rain date is July 6. The skies of Hudson had been lit by colorful fireworks around Independence Day for more than 40 years but fell dark in 2006. After seven years, the major sponsor reduced its contribution, and no one else stepped up to make up the difference in 2006. Hudson Community Foundation raised funds to renew the event last year and is seeking businesses to contribute to the endowment fund to continue the tradition for future years. Suzanne Kanzleiter, administrative assistant for the Hudson Community Foundation, said the goal is to raise money for a $500,000 endowment that would sustain itself for future firework shows. In 2007, the foundation raised $56,000 toward its goal. Anyone can donate to the foundation, Kanzleiter said. "It is not feasible to expect one company or one organization to bear the entire cost for years," said Jim Hackney, president of the foundation's board of trustees. "We all enjoy the fireworks celebration, and we all need to participate in supporting the event." The city will provide services such as fire, police, Emergency Medical Services and clean up crews. Hudson Community Foundation is a non-profit organization that sponsors and underwrites many programs in the city with a mission "to enrich Hudson forever." It supports youth education and recreation, arts and culture, historical and environmental preservation and social services. Contributions can be sent to Hudson Community Foundation, P.O.
