Girls lax squad posts 3-0 markApril 30, 2008
The Hudson girls lacrosse team won its fifth straight match after posting a 3-0 mark at the Cleveland Heights Invitational, which concluded April 26. The Lady Explorers (13-1) finished the tournament with a 6-4 victory over Mount Lebanon (Pa.). Mackenzie Parsons led the way with four goals, two ground balls, one interception, one draw control and one caused turnover. Mackenzie Gordon and Kristen Kern also found the nets once apiece for Hudson. Others who contributed for the Lady Explorers were Molly Schoonover (three ground balls, one interception and one caused turnover), Mallory Vehar (three ground balls and two caused turnovers) and Meaghan Thornlow (three ground balls). Hudson goalkeeper Jaqui Gemberling made seven saves on 11 shots. "Jaqui had a great weekend," said Lady Explorers head coach Joya Mitchell. "During the Mount Lebanon game, she was 5-for-5 on free position 8-meter shots. She just keeps improving more and more each game. "Her overall percentage for 8-meter shots this season is at 77 percent," she added. "That is an excellent percentage at this stage in the game. She has great movement and vision when taking an 8-meter shot." Earlier in the day, Hudson scored a 9-6 win over Nichols (N.Y.). Elizabeth Baglieri led the way with four goals, two ground balls and one draw control and Parsons added two goals, two assists, three ground balls and one stick check. Also contributing were Cassie Hammer (one goal and three ground balls), Kira Abakumov (one goal and one assist), Gordon (one goal) and Vehar (four ground balls and one caused turnover). Gemberling made seven saves on 13 shots. The Lady Explorers earned a 15-6 victory over Upper St. Clair (Pa.) April 25. Baglieri had six goals, two ground balls, three draw controls and one assist and Mackenzie Parsons had three goals, two stick checks, two ground balls and three draw controls to lead the Lady Explorers. Cassie Hammer, Abbey Mackessy and Kira Abakumov had two goals apiece to round out the scoring for Hudson. Hammer added four ground balls and draw controls and Abakumov had three ground balls to go along with one assist and one draw control. Erika Fisher added two stick checks to cause a turnover and had two draw controls and Gemberling made five saves on 11 shots. "The defense consisting of Molly Schoonover, Maria Kreighbaum, Meaghan Thornlow and Mallory Vehar caused a handful of turnovers and played amazing defense to contribute to the win," Mitchell said. "Playing five games over six days is really a difficult task to do," she added. "By the last game, I could tell the girls were really getting tired. However, they never let that get to them or affect their game. They never moaned or complained that they were tired. They went out each game and played with 100-percent intensity and aggressiveness. "They are so mentally tough," Mitchell said. "It is really amazing to watch them play. In all my years of coaching, I have never had a team that has wanted a win more than these girls. They work so well together on and off the field. If we are down goals, they are making the necessary adjustments for the win." The Lady Explorers were scheduled to host Gates Mills Hawken April 29. Results were not available at press time. They are set to host Rocky River Magnificat May 5 at 4:30 p.m. -- From staff reports E-mail: stowsports@recordpub.com Phone: 330-686-3914 Comments
