The first ever Webkinz Extravaganza will be April 25 to 27 at Nicky Nicole in First & Main. There will be prizes, game stations and a grand prize raffle. Children also will be able to enter a design a Webkinz challenge, participate in a scavenger hunt and buy one Webkinz and get a surprise Webkinz free. The Webkinz Extravaganza will be April 25 from 3 to 6 p.m., April 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and April 27 from noon to 4 p.m. Mom and daughter breakfast May 10 Nicky Nicole will host a mothers and daughters breakfast May 10 at 9:30 a.m. at The Vue in First & Main. The event includes a specially designed meal, table favors, activities, fashion crafts, games, a parade of fashions by guests and a Nicky Nicole summer fashion preview. Railroad announces staff promotions Steve Wait, President and CEO of Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, recently announced several staff promotions within the organization. Kelly Steele has been appointed to director of marketing and education. Steele, who has been with CVSR since April of 2007, previously had the position of associate director. She will oversee the marketing, promotions, advertising, special events, public relations and education for the organization. Ron Gallimore has been named to the manager of information technology. Gallimore, who has been employed with CVSR for 14 years, will oversee all technology services, including Web site development with on-line ticketing, data mining, software implementation and security. Larry Blanchard has been promoted to train master. Blanchard's new responsibilities will include training conductors and assisting in safety and rule compliance. Brian Kelly has been promoted to assistant train master. Kelly will assist with the training of volunteers, scheduling of train crews and performing efficiency testing. Financial seminar
The Laurel Lake Foundation will present the second part in a two-part Money Matters seminar, "Estate Planning -- Beyond the Basics," April 28 from 1:15 to 2:30 p.m. at Laurel Lake Retirement Community, 200 Laurel Lake Drive in Hudson. Participants will learn about tax efficient ways to use IRAs, the value of bloodline trusts and other current topics. Presenter Maria E. The Learned Owl Book Shop, 204 N. Main St., is hosting a "Knit Night" book and knitting event April 24 from 4 to 8 p.m. Bring knitting supplies to knit with the ladies from the bookstore and representatives from Miss Chickpea's knitting shop, who will demonstrate techniques. The knitting books "Knitting For Peace" and "One Skein Wonders" will be featured. The Learned Owl Book Shop will offer a 10 percent discount on all knitting books during the event. Area business owner addresses chambers Three local chambers -- Twinsburg, Aurora and Solon -- are coming together to sponsor a 3Chamber Business to Business Expo May 1 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Signature of Solon, 39000 Signature Dr. The event is free to area business owners and executives and includes three workshops. One of the three workshops will be led by Hudson business owner Deborah Chaddock Brown, owner of AllWrite Ink. Her session "30 Marketing Tips in 30 Minutes" will feature ways to market a business. Vue, Humane Society partner for fundraiser Vue Restaurant will present the first annual Hudson Wine Festival to benefit the Humane Society of Greater Akron July 19 and 20. The event will showcase more than 250 wines from national and international producers. There will be musical entertainment, international foods, cooking demonstrations, discussions on wine trends and various raffles throughout the weekend. The Hudson Wine Festival will be July 19 from noon to 8 p.m. and July 20 from 1 to 6 p.m. along Village Way adjacent to Vue Restaurant and across from the Hudson library. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door and include 10 tastings and a souvenir wine glass. Additional tastings are 10 for $5 at the event. A VIP event will be July 18 at 6 p.m. inside the Vue where guests will be treated to hors d'oeuvres from Chef Rick Carson and his staff, along with premium wine tastings and a silent auction. Vue hosts sushi course Chef Rick Carson will detail the history and different approaches to sushi at a cooking and wine class April 26 beginning at 1 p.m. at Vue Restaurant and Lounge. He will discuss what to look for when purchasing seafood and demonstrate how to roll maki. The menu will include an Asian inspired salad, an entrée of three types of sushi rolls and dessert. Both seafood and vegetable sushi will be served. Each course will be paired with wines and sake selections from the restaurants award winning wine list. Jake's Good Life, 16 Clinton St., a retail store solely dedicated to the "Life is good" brand of clothing and home decor, has partnered with Bellefaire JCD in support of the not-for-profit organization's efforts to provide autism resources through its educational facility and services. Beginning in April, Jake's Good Life will donate proceeds from the sale of its popular "Giving Tee" T-shirts to Bellefaire's fundraising campaign. Profits from sales of the "Life is good" gift books also are donated to the cause. April has been nationally designated as "Autism Awareness Month." With a residential and day school and various support programs, Shaker Heights-based Bellefaire has served thousands of autistic children and their families. A designated area of the Jake's Good Life store will display the items being sold to benefit Bellefaire, including T-shirts for adults and children and the "Life is good" gift book. Throughout its "Good to Give" campaign, for every T-shirt and book sale, $10 and $8 will be donated to Bellefaire's mission. In addition to specific product sales proceeds, other events are being planned to support Jake's yearlong fundraising efforts for Bellefaire, including a community "Life is good" reception in Hudson this spring, and sponsorship of Bellefaire's annual biathlon event held in August. Merchants, Community First join forces Community First and the Hudson downtown merchants are teaming up in support of the community-wide awareness campaign called "Take a Second, Make a Difference." Throughout April, participating merchants will sponsor giveaways and distribute buttons and Community First informational materials to show support for Hudson youth. Posters and sponsor tags will be in merchants windows. The Community First "Take a Second, Make a Difference" awareness campaign is sponsored by The Burton D. Morgan Foundation, The Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation and the Hudson Community Foundation. It asks residents to take a moment out of their day to make difference in a child's life. Representatives of the Take Me Home program will be at KidsLink Neurobehavioral Center, 8054 Darrow Road, April 26 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sponsored by Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh and Sheriff Drew Alexander, Take Me Home is a database for individuals who may have difficulty communicating in a law enforcement situation, such as people with autism, Alzheimer's or dementia. The database is maintained by the Sheriff and Prosecutor's Offices and is only accessible to law enforcement personnel. She has worked with Ralph Lauren of Polo. During her career in fashion, she created Chamilia jewelry. Each bead Chamilia offers has been hand-designed by Rieder.
