Orthodox church plans Easter celebrations

While Easter has come and gone for most Hudson churches this year, there is one parish in town awaiting the celebration of Christ's resurrection.

Following the Julian calendar, St. Herman of Alaska Eastern Orthodox Church will offer a full schedule of Lenten and Easter services through Great and Holy Pascha, April 27, and throughout the following Bright Week at the Chapel in Markillie Cemetery.

The Lenten schedule includes Divine Liturgy Sundays at 10 a.m. through April 20; Presanctified Liturgies Wednesdays and Fridays at 6 p.m. through April 23; and Vespers Saturdays at 6 p.m. through April 19.

Great and Holy Pascha will begin with Nocturnes at 11:30 p.m. April 26 and continue into the early morning of April 27.

St. Herman of Alaska Eastern Orthodox Church, like all Orthodox churches, calculates the date of Easter, called Pascha, differently than the Christian churches of the West.

The Orthodox still adhere to the Julian calendar, while Western Christianity follows the Gregorian calendar.

These calendars are 13 days apart.

In addition, according to the council of Nicea in the 4th century A.D., Easter must fall on the first Sunday after the full moon following the vernal equinox.

Therefore, Eastern and Western Easter may coincide or be separated by as many as five weeks.
