Bridge & Beyond: Recent 'Bridge is fun' graduates enjoy fruits of their laborApril 9, 2008
by Kathy Wolking, correspondent The Oscars have their golden statue. The Masters has its green jacket. And Hudson bridge has its coveted bridge hankie. Congratulations to Debbie Amoroso, first-place winner and recipient of the hand embroidered hankie. Graduates of the six-week course celebrated with a bridge party, enjoying the fruits of their labors. Chilled libations, rich cannolli, cheeses and caramel corn filled their plates as they bid, doubled and scored the games. Runners-up included Nancy Hamad, Jack Phipps, Rick Hamad, Carl Bacik, Kris McMaster, Debbie Wilson and Kathy Novosel. For those who want to learn to play bridge, beginner classes are forming. Register by calling Kathy Wolking at 330-342-0208 or e-mail her at fwolking@roadrunner.com. Tricksters Hosts Sue and Roger L'Hommedieu tended their guests with warmth and hospitality. They also tended two charming canines, unschooled in bridge and other issues of propriety. While Katie Warner scored big at the bridge table with 2,640 points, the furry bandits made their score from the table also -- a wedge of brie. Congratulations to canine ingenuity and to runners-up, Joann Satava and Roger L'Hommedieu. Thursday Dealers Thanks to Barb Jurkovic, who keeps us up to date on this group. The Dealers enjoyed the hospitality of Kathleen Lambacher in March. Judy DiMizio was the big winner with 1,550 points. Maria Zeleznik placed second with 1,400 points. And Sharon Jones was the runner up with 1,320 points. Second Tuesday Duplicate Betty Williams hosted in March. Congratulations to first-place winners Barb Breedon and Rita Frantz. Deuces and Dummies Twenty inches of snow proved no deterrent. It was, in fact, proof positive that bridge is Ohio's best winter sport. Sally and Angus McArn stoked the fires, warmed the coffee, and filled the buffet so all could enjoy a cozy Hudson evening. Congratulations to high scorer Mary Zielasko and runner-up Sheila Packard. Slammin' Burgettes Chrys Bicicchi was the evening's winner with 2,460 points. Kim Peller placed second with 2,190 points and Sheila Packard was third with 2,030 points. The group enjoyed the warm hospitality of Debbie Sergi. Kings and Queens A mere blizzard had little chance of stopping the aptly named Kings and Queens. They braved the frigid night air and unplowed roads to enjoy their favorite card game. Congratulations to the evening's winners, Sheila and Chuck Packard. St. Andrews Highlanders Lynne Stralka hosted the Valentines Day game with chocolate brownies and ice cream. Linda Friday took first place, followed by Cindy Newton and Lynne Stralka. Diane Cooper was the March hostess. She served chocolate cake and helped herself to first place with 2,700 points. Peggy Garibaldi was second with 2,060 points and new player Debbie Wilson placed third with 1,920. Diamonds in the Ruff Congratulations to Leslie Janikis, top scorer at the March games. Runners-up included Sharon Jones, Kim Peller and Linda Kardish. Hostess Terri Soeder invited spring time with hand painted wine glasses, chilled shrimp and Easter paperware. -:-:-:- All Hudson bridge groups are welcome to submit scores for publication.
