Hudson man
receives certification

Hudson resident James Orwig, a financial professional with AXA Advisors LLC in Akron, has earned the Certified Financial Planner certification. The CFP mark is earned through an extensive program of advanced professional study and a rigorous examination in various financial, business and estate planning subjects.

CFP marks are awarded to individuals who successfully complete the CFP board's initial and ongoing certification requirements.

Orwig works with individuals and business owners to help them define their retirement goals and create strategies to help meet their objectives. He earned a bachelor's degree in business from Wittenberg University in Springfield. He also has the FINRA Series 66 and seven licenses.

He is involved with the Akron chapter of the Society of Financial Services Professional and is a member of the International Referral Network, the Hudson chapter of the Kiwanis International, the Hudson and Akron Chambers of Commerce and is on the call committee of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.

given award

The Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy recently recognized Heather Jalbert of Hudson with a Community Service Award.

The Community Service Award is endowed by Glenn and Ruth Saltzman in memory of their son, Jon.

Jalbert, who is a clerical assistant in the colleges' on-call pool, has served as chair and planning committee member for the Tree Festival, an annual event to benefit Akron Children's Hospital. For the past six years, she has been a board member of Women in Touch with Akron's and Other Counties Needs and its Women of WITAN Charity Fundraiser. She volunteers at the Battered Women's Shelter, Good Neighbors, Our Lady of the Elms, Hoban schools and the Ronald McDonald House. She serves on the committees for NEOUCOM Foundation's Golf Outing and Diversity Leadership and Awards Dinner.

hired at local firm

Radcom, a professional services consulting firm in Hudson, recently hired Deborah Urycki of Hudson as a full-time project writer and Nikki Custy of Hudson as a part-time project writer.

Urycki is assisting a high-tech client specializing in scientific government contracts with developing online help files and user documentation.

For the past two years Urycki was an adjunct professor of journalism in the journalism and mass communication department of Kent State University. She has a master's degree in reporting and editing, and a bachelor's degree in journalism from KSU.

Custy works out of Radcom headquarters to assist with a variety of projects on a part-time basis. Custy is a reporter for Hudson Life magazine. She worked for Supportsoft, a California-based software company in a remote office position as a technical writer. She also worked as a contractor on a technical communication project at First Energy of Ohio. Custy was an English major at John Carroll University.

Bird houses
built March 30

The Wild Bird Center at Acme Plaza in Hudson invites children and their families to build their own bird houses in a program at the store from 3 to 4 p.m. March 30. Reservations are required by March 19. The cost is $20 for materials.

for binoculars

The Wild Bird Center of Hudson and Alpen Optics are supporters of Optics for the Tropics' new initiative, "Birding Buddies Partnership Program."

The objective of the "Birding Buddies Partnership Program" is to connect students, families and communities in the Americas in order to develop and increased awareness of migratory wild bird conservation issues and habitat preservation.

Posters, counter cards, and a donation box are the points of awareness displayed at the store. All funds received through this promotion program go toward the purchase of sturdy waterproof binoculars to be used by multiple hands in Latin America.

Spring open house
to be in April

Laurel Lake Retirement community's annual spring open house will be at 2 p.m. April 8 and 9.

Guests will enjoy refreshments and a presentation. Tours of Laurel Lake apartments and villas, each selected to showcase popular floor plans and creative design ideas, will follow.

Yours Truly wants baseball gloves

Yours Truly Restaurants will collect new and gently used baseball gloves for the Cleveland Baseball Federation through April 15.

This marks the second consecutive year that Yours Truly has partnered with CBF, a 98-year-old non-profit organization that runs all the baseball and softball programs for the city of Cleveland.

CBF provides full funding for more than 7,000 youth participants, as well as the leadership to ensure that the baseball programs contain components that promote social and educational values to help youth become productive adult citizens.

Monetary donations also will be collected. Donations may be dropped off at Yours Truly Monday through Saturday, 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., or made online at www.cbfkids.com.

Store partners
with charity

Jake's Good Life, 16 Clinton St., a retail store solely dedicated to the "Life is good" brand of clothing and home decor, has partnered with Bellefaire JCD in support of the not-for-profit organization's efforts to provide autism resources through its educational facility and services.

Beginning in April, Jake's Good Life will donate proceeds from the sale of its popular "Giving Tee" T-shirts to Bellefaire's fundraising campaign. Profits from sales of the "Life is good" gift books also are donated to the cause.

April has been nationally designated as "Autism Awareness Month."

With a residential and day school and various support programs, Shaker Heights-based Bellefaire has served thousands of autistic children and their families.

A designated area of the Jake's Good Life store will display the items being sold to benefit Bellefaire, including T-shirts for adults and children and the "Life is good" gift book.

Throughout its "Good to Give" campaign, for every T-shirt and book sale, $10 and $8 will be donated to Bellefaire's mission.

In addition to specific product sales proceeds, other events are being planned to support Jake's yearlong fundraising efforts for Bellefaire, including a community "Life is good" reception in Hudson this spring, and sponsorship of Bellefaire's annual biathlon event held in August.

Vue, humane society partner

Vue Restaurant will present the first annual Hudson Wine Festival to benefit the Humane Society of Greater Akron July 19 and 20.

The event will showcase more than 250 wines from national and international producers. There will be musical entertainment, international foods, cooking demonstrations, discussions on wine trends and various raffles throughout the weekend.

The Hudson Wine Festival will be July 19 from noon to 8 p.m. and July 20 from 1 to 6 p.m. in the parking lot behind the Vue Restaurant, 46 Village Way. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door and include 10 tastings and a souvenir wine glass. Additional tastings are 10 for $5 at the event.

A VIP event will be July 18 at 6 p.m. inside the Vue where guests will be treated to hors d'oeuvres from Chef Rick Carson and his staff, along with premium wine tastings and a silent auction. Tickets are available for $100 and can be obtained through the Vue or HSGA.

Alzheimer's disease discussed April 10

Neurologist Peter J. Whitehouse and co-author Daniel George, will discuss their new book,
"The Myth of Alzheimer's: What You Aren't Being Told About Today's Most Dreaded Disease" April 10 at 4:30 p.m. at Laurel Lake Retirement Community in Hudson.

A book signing and reception will follow.

Western Reserve Singles Network gets together the first Friday of each month for TGIF parties.

Legion hosts breakfast

Hudson American Legion has an "All-U-Can-Eat" breakfast every Saturday morning at the Legion Hall, 5790 Hudson Drive for $5 per person, children under 12 can eat for $3.

The breakfast is open to the public.

Breakfast is served from 8 to 11.

The menu is hash browns, eggs, breakfast burritos, pancakes, sausage and bacon, biscuits and gravy, and coffee. Juice and milk are extra.

Water concerns to be addressed in May

Environmental experts from across Ohio will take part in a two-day conference addressing storm water flooding and water quality concerns across Northeast Ohio.

The conference is planned for May 21 and 22 at Tri-C's Eastern Campus, 4250 Richmond Road in Highland Hills.

Professionals who deal with storm water issues on a regular basis, including engineers, consultants, watershed organizations, governmental organizations and academic staff are expected to attend the conference.

Learned Owl raffles American Girl Doll

Visit The Learned Owl Book Shop, 204 N. Main St., until April 14 to enter a drawing to win a "Mia" American Girl Doll.

Mia St. Clair is American Girl's 2008 Girl of the Year. Mia stories give girls a peek into some of the challenges that come from competing in sports.

The Learned Owl Book Shop will host an event about Mia April 5 from noon to 2 p.m.

The event will feature free Mia posters and the opportunity to make hair scrunchies. The event is free with the purchase of any American Girl Book and is for children ages 7 and older.

Love and Logic
course offered

Hudson Community Education and Recreation is offering "Parenting Teens with Love and Logic."

The workshop is taught by Jan Kaluza, a trained Love and Logic facilitator, Hudson High teacher and Kent State instructor.

The next session runs for five Tuesdays from April 1 to 29.

The workshop meets from 7 to 9 p.m. in Room A-100 at Hudson High School.

A $10 workbook is used for this class.

to host bat event

The Friends of Stow Parks and Recreation will host Wild Birds Unlimited Chief Naturalist John Schaust as the featured speaker about bat species and their habitats and housing during the group's March 18 meeting at Silver Springs Lodge, 5070 Stow Road at 7 p.m.

The presentation will discuss how valuable bats are as a natural mosquito control.

In addition, Marlo Perdicas, a Summit County Metro Parks biologist, will speak about local bats and projects to attract them. Other local bat enthusiasts also will be present.

The event is open to the community, and a free deluxe bat house will be raffled off by Chris Stranahan, Stow resident and owner of the Wild Birds Unlimited store in Cuyahoga Falls.
