The boy who rode a bike before taking his first steps is taking large steps in the competitive sport of cycling.

Hudson resident Erick Madis, 11, took part in the Junior Road and Track Cycling Nationals in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Seven Springs, Pa.

The track portion was in Colorado from June 30 to July 3; and the Pennsylvania trip, from July 13 to 17, was the road portion.

This was Madis' second year in the competition -- and he feels that he improved.

"The [competition] in Colorado went very well," said Madis. "I did pretty well in Seven Springs, too."

The incoming middle school student at Hudson Middle School, finished in fifth place in the 500-meter Colorado race; fourth in the 1,000-meter race and finished a career-best third place in the 2,000-meter race.

The "omnium," an overall score of the three races, earned him a fourth-place finish.

With his four Ohio teammates, Erick placed fifth in the team pursuit, and in on the road competition in Pennsylvania he placed ninth in the time trial event.

His teammates are: Drew Bercaw, 13 of North Canton; Jakob Smith, 13, of North Olmsted; Kyle Hill, 13, from Columbia Station; and Mitch Gabel, 18, from Lorain.

His mother said she is proud of her son's accomplishments.

"It's a lot of fun for him and kids his age," said Beth. "He hopes as a 12-year-old next year, that he can stand at the highest spot on the podium."

To prepare for next year, Erick said he trains everyday, with his father, Edson and his 7-year-old brother, Ryan -- who also wants to ride a bicycle like his big brother.

When the weather is inclimate outside, he said he stays in shape with his cyclocross bike -- a standard bike with thick mountain bike tires.

"Last year, I was lower in the age category," said Erick. "Next year, I have a very good chance of doing well."
