Hudson -- Sean Nock and Kimberly Martin are hoping to sweeten up Hudson this Valentine's Day with the opening of their new specialty bakery that will serve only cupcakes.

"Everyone likes indulging," Nock said. "Sweetie food is the best way to do it."

Main Street Cupcakes will open Feb. 2 at 238 N. Main St., in a space formerly occupied by Coffee on Main, Nock said.

Nock and Martin, a husband and wife team who have worked in restaurants for 20 years and reside in Macedonia, said they began kicking around ideas for their own business a few years ago.

They considered wine bars and other types of eateries, but about six months ago, after Martin took a trip to New York City, the idea of an all-cupcake bakery took hold. In New York, Nock said, there are many specialty bakeries.

He and Martin chose Hudson for their niche business because they believe the community is cultured and well-traveled, and may enjoy finding a specialty bakery like those in other cities right in their hometown.

The shop already has attracted a lot of window shoppers, Nock said.

"It feels good because people are stopping in and they're interested," he said.

Nock said he and Martin like the historic Main Street atmosphere and are looking forward to the foot traffic Hudson's quaint shops could generate.

Once the shop opens, Nock said he plans to keep customers coming back to try the wide variety of specialty cupcake recipes he has been creating. Red velvet is his most popular cake flavor at the private parties he has baked for, but the shop also will carry more exotic flavors like mandarin orange, zucchini and pineapple coconut.

Nock said the specialty flavors will rotate in addition to about 10 standard flavors like chocolate and vanilla topped with "gobs" of buttercream. He also is planning varieties on the standards, including cupcakes filled with fruit preserves, fluffy cream or custard.

Standard cupcakes will be a standard size, he said, but the specialty flavors also be offered in a "jumbo" size. Nock said he also will eventually create cupcake towers for weddings and parties.

Nock said while cupcakes will be all the shop offers in terms of desserts to start, customers also will be able to enjoy coffee in the store's seating area.

"The more the community tells us things they like, the more we will develop," Nock said, adding that after the business is established, more dessert types could be added.
