Hudson -- A local church is inviting the entire community to a Sept. 13 worship service and dinner and a Sept. 14 commemoration service to celebrate 50 years of serving the Hudson community.
Hudson United Methodist Church, 2600 Hudson-Aurora Road, began in 1964 when a group of residents met that July to discuss the need for a Methodist church in Hudson, according to the church. The group placed about 1,200 telephone calls though the community to gauge support.
The first Sunday service was Sept. 13, 1964, in a member's home. It later moved to a school gymnasium.
According to church history, members dedicated eight acres of land on the corner of Hudson-Aurora and Stow in September 1965, with more than 250 parishioners and community members attending a groundbreaking service three months later.
The building opened March 1, 1970, with later additions of a kitchen, classrooms, offices and a community activity room.
"We are prayerful that more than 250 current and past parishioners, former pastors and their spouses, and community members will take part in the Sept. 13 and 14 events," said The Rev. Hoyte Wilhelm, senior minister of the church. "We look forward to celebrating in thankfulness the work of our faithful founding members as we continue to build the ministries of Hudson United Methodist Church."
Tracy Zappone, who lives across the street from the church ,is planning to attend with husband, Patrick, sons Grady, 12, Noah, 9 and Fisher, 7.
"We have been members since we moved to Hudson in 1999," Zappone said. "My parents, Curt and Sherry Newill, actually moved to the area six years ago and they attend now too, which is fun."
Zappone's family chose HUMC due to its friendliness, she said.
"We initially chose the church because of the positive energy and welcoming atmosphere we experienced when we visited," Zappone added. "HUMC is a terrific church home for families. We value the children of the church family and offer many ways for children to grow spiritually and serve joyfully."
The church has a strong history with "passionately supporting local and global missions," she said.
"Our members have fun together and support each other along our spiritual journeys," she added. "We hope to keep growing disciples and sharing the light of Christ over the next 50 years."
There is limited seating available for the dinner. Tickets are available at the church office from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Childcare will be available during the dinner.
