Hudson PTO recognizes teachers, staff with awards

Hudson --The Hudson PTO luncheon recognized its volunteers, School Board, teachers and staff at a May 8 luncheon at the Lake Forest Country Club.

The recipient of the PTO Pre-K to 5 Teacher of the Year Award was Yvonne Hays, a fourth- grade teacher at East Woods Elementary. She was nominated by the parents of two students, Reed Lewis and Tyler Vaillancourt, who presented Hays with the award.

The recipient of the Middle and High School grades Teacher of the Year Award was Linda Widdowson, who was nominated by Nolyn Martz and his mother. Widdowson teaches individual/small group instruction at Hudson High School.

PTO President Clare Smith presented a new award, the PTO Staff Member of the Year, to Angie Hagan, a secretary at Hudson High School.

This year the PTO offered $31,000 in the form of scholarships, awards and grants, Smith said. Through the grants process, PTO bought items such as Chromebooks, Smart Boards, musical instruments, books, a digital camera and many items to support the 7 Habits initiatives in the Hudson schools.

"We've even bought a skeleton for the high school anatomy class," Smith added.

The Pancake Breakfast is the PTO's major fundraiser and served 2,500 breakfasts this year, Smith said. The Pancake Breakfast Committee was led by Darcy Mihalek, Sue Carter and Jennifer Fisher.

Fall fundraisers at each of Hudson schools provides programs such as COSI, The Illusion Factory theatre, field trips and events. Sue Swain, Kris Stoehr and the PTO Right To Read Committee provided visits by two authors, Nathan Hale and Betsey Snyder.

PTO's Box Tops, Amazon and Rewards Programs raised nearly $13,000 this year and was headed by Becky Hinkle and her Rewards team.

"Our PTO books haven't closed this year but to date over $75,000 has been put back into our schools through the fundraising efforts of our PTO members, parents, students and teachers," Smith said.

The PTO had a successful Middle School Supply Sale with the work of Pat Cassell, Darcy Mihalek and their team of volunteers. Cassell also organizes the Elementary Supply Kits (that are on sale now), is the PTO Web Master and has also been one of the Middle School Head Reps with Cindy Ramsay this year.

"One of our main missions in PTO is to provide lasting memories for our children, and we do that through the many events that we run," Smith said.
