UPDATE: The Summit County Medical Examiner's office has ruled a homicide in the death of 21-year-old Michelle Johnson of Maplepark Drive in Stow.
Her body was found during a welfare check by Stow police Saturday in a shed behind a residence in the 4400 block of Maplepark Drive.
The autopsy has been completed and the cause of death was "sharp force injuries to the neck," according to Gary Guenther of the medical examiner's office.
A police officer making a welfare check on a Maplepark Road woman Saturday evening discovered a body in shed in the backyard, according to the Stow Police Department.
The incident is being investigated as a homicide, according to a press release from the department.
The name of the victim is being withheld pending the notification of the next of kin.
From the press release:
On March 15 at 5:30 p.m., Stow police received a call from the mother of a Stow resident who requested that the department check the welfare of her daughter who lived on Maplepark Road. The mother stated that she had not heard from her daughter for two days and that she was concerned for her well-being.
An officer checked the residence and received no response when he knocked on the front door. The officer then went to the rear of the residence to see if he could get a response at the rear door.
The officer passed by an open shed near the rear door of the residence when he saw what appeared to be a hand protruding from underneath a pile of blankets in the shed. The officer checked further and found that there was a body under the blanket.
The officer could find no pulse and he notified a supervisor who responded to the scene. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was notified along with Stow EMS and the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Upon further investigation it was discovered that the body was that of a white female and that she had been the victim of a homicide.
If anyone has any information regarding this homicide they are asked to call the lead investigator, Det. Sgt. Steve Dunton at 330-689-5707.
