Hudson -- The Board of Education approved the guaranteed maximum price for the Malson Athletic Center at $2.1 million at its Feb. 27 meeting.
All funds for the project, which will be built adjacent to Hudson Memorial Stadium, have been raised, according to District Business Manager Derek Cluse.
"We are excited about the fact that all the pieces and parts have come together," Cluse said. "We've done our homework and feel this is a good price."
The $2.1 million guarantee covers the entire cost of the building project, baring any changes or unforeseen problems, according to Cluse.
In October the Board approved Hammond Construction, Inc. as the design builder.
The district will soon begin soliciting bids for a variety of projects in order for ground breaking later this month, Cluse said. The district estimates a Sept. 9 completion, he added.
Board President David Zuro called the project "an exciting prospect" and thanked everyone who donated, both private and corporate.
The center is named in honor of Scott Malson, who played football at Hudson High School and was a coach in the Hudson Hawks Youth Football Program. Mr. Malson died eight years ago of cancer at the age of 40.
Mr. Malson's parents, Richard and Barbara Malson, donated almost $500,000 to the project. The initial donation was leftover from a $2.1 million donation to build Scott Malson Stadium at the middle school. The Malsons also issued a matching dollar-for-dollar $500,000 gift challenge over the summer.
According to Superintendent Phil Herman, the district received the Malson's $500,000 check Feb. 27.
Other funding sources included $385,000 from the Board in construction funding left over from a previous construction project and $500,000 from a community reinvestment/tax abatement plan with Boston Heights, via an agreement with Arhaus Furniture.
The two-story, 9,400 square foot center will house locker rooms, a hall of fame, training rooms, coaching offices and storage on the first floor and a community room on the second floor, overlooking the stadium.
"While the funds have been collected and we are able to move forward with the project, this just gets us the building," Herman said. "This does not get us all furnishing and some of the things that are needed for inside. So you will continue to see us seeking some support from the community for additional furnishings for the inside of the building."
There are still a variety of donation opportunities available, Herman said.
