David Dix, publisher of the Record Publishing Co.'s weekly newspapers and the daily Record-Courier, was recognized at the Ohio Newspaper Association's annual convention in Columbus Feb. 6 as he stepped down as president of the ONA Board of Trustees.
"After 16 years on the Board, I am saying goodbye," Dix said.
He thanked members for his chance to serve and the opportunities he experienced.
"I've seen parts of Ohio I would never have seen without being a part of ONA," he said. "Ohio is beautiful.
"It's been an opportunity for me to professionally expand my horizons," he added.
Dix also praised the organization and the countless ways it helps newspapers of all sizes throughout the state.
"Where would we be without the ONA fighting for us day in and day out?" he asked.
Dix said that he "very much enjoyed working with ONA Executive Director Dennis Hetzel."
Hetzel thanked Dix for his years of service.
"David has been a great leader for the ONA and a terrific mentor and friend for me during his two years as Board president," Hetzel said Feb. 7. "I am certain no Board president has ever worked harder or cared more about not only our industry but also the communities we serve.
"Under his watch, we wrestled with some difficult decisions, kept our organization strong and started some major initiatives to help Ohio's newspapers not only survive but thrive in the future."
Incoming ONA Trustee President Karl Heminger praised David Dix and the Dix family for their decades of involvement in the association.
"There is no better family to represent what a newspaper should be," he said.
David Dix is the fourth in his family to serve as ONA president. His cousin R. Victor Dix served as president from 1984-85. His uncle Raymond B. Dix, twin brother of David's father Robert, served as president from 1964-65. And David's grandfather Emmett Dix served as chairman of the board from 1944-1953.
David Dix was elected president at the group's annual convention in February 2012. He had been a member of the ONA Board of Trustees since 1998.
Record Publishing Co. General Manager Ron Waite was named to the ONA Board of Trustees Feb. 6.
Established in 1933, The Ohio Newspaper Association consolidated two groups of publishers which had existed since the late 1800s -- The Buckeye Press Association for weekly newspapers and The Associated Ohio Dailies.
Today, ONA represents all of Ohio's daily newspapers and weekly newspapers. It offers members services, including government relations and lobbying, publications, seminars and employee training, legal assistance, group insurance and advertising services.
