Proceeds from rummage sale of purses to help out local pooches

Hudson -- The search for a brand name purse or wallet does not need to lead to New York, Paris or even the Internet.

More than 600 purses and wallets will be for sale April 19 and 20 during the "Purses for Pooches" rummage sale to benefit PAWSibilities, the Humane Society of Greater Akron.

The rummage sale is a four-times-a-year event and is a major fundraiser for the shelter.

"With our Purses for Pooches campaign, we hope to raise more funds through our rummage sale and attract a new audience to our sale," said Heather Kinaitis, special event and volunteer coordinator. "We truly have something for everyone and purses have been a wonderful success at past sales. [They] seem to be a big hit -- they alone bring in a nice stream of revenue for the animals we care for on a daily basis."

Susan McCutcheon of Hudson is a volunteer with the society and co-chair of the event.

"One of our very successful fundraisers is the rummage sale," McCutcheon added.

In the past, McCutcheon said she noticed that purses and wallets seemed to sell very well.

"I myself know, as a woman, that I have too many purses in my closet," McCutcheon said. "We've always had purses, but this is the first time we've highlighted it."

There will also be other items for sale, McCutcheon said. The items include: appliances, collectables, toys, tools and wall decorations.

Purses can be dropped off at the humane society or Gavin Scott Salon in Stow, which is offering a discount on future services for those donating purses.

So far, more than 300 purses have been dropped off by salon customers, McCutcheon said.

Each rummage sale raises about $20,000, McCutcheon said.

"Everything they donate to us is 100- percent for the animals," McCutcheon said.

McCutcheon requests that readers "in spring cleaning mode" should consider "donating gently used purses and wallets to Purses for Pooches."

"After all, what woman doesn't have a few extra handbags in her closet," McCutcheon said. "Members of our local communities have donated over 600 handbags and wallets for our rummage sale and many of these donations include genuine designer bags such as Coach, Dooney and Bourke, Prada, Kate Spade, Brahmin, Calvin Klein, and Vera Bradley."

McCutcheon said the society wants to alert past and potentially new customers that the handbags and purses will be available.

"Hopefully new potential buyers will come to our rummage sale to buy a special handbag - at a wonderful price - and help animals in need - what a win-win situation," McCutcheon said.
