Twinsburg -- The city may soon welcome a new medical manufacturing company that is expected to bring eight jobs and the potential for 14 more over the next three years to the city.
SMC Design Dynamics, Inc., a medical equipment manufacturer currently located at 1691 Georgetown Road in Hudson, is looking to purchase a vacant facility and surrounding property at 2374 Edison Boulevard for $1.1 million, according to Twinsburg Planning and Development Larry Finch.
SMC officials declined comment on the sale, which still requires approval by City Council. Legislation is set to be addressed by City Council on the medical manufacturer's move at the March 12 City Council meeting.
The city of Twinsburg is offering the company a 5-year, between 20 and 30 percent income tax incentive to encourage the move, Finch said. SMC would receive a grant for the abated amount of income tax after filing income taxes for its first year in the city. The tax incentive's percentages may change before the deal is finalized, Finch said.
Though a specific payroll was not divulged, the company satisfies the $500,000 minimum payroll amount required to be part of Twinsburg's Tax Occupancy Program, Finch said, and the additional payroll promised by SMC over the next three years would exceed the $250,000 increase in wages required under the program.
Finch added that SMC expects to create about 14 new jobs in Twinsburg over three years, to be added to its staff of eight, if the purchase is approved.
"They're a small company ... and they're looking to relocate to another place where they can get into manufacturing and product development," Finch said. "That location is pretty much exactly what they're looking for."
The move would add to Twinsburg's burgeoning medical manufacturing workforce, anchored by the some of the largest employers in city -- Edgepark Medical Supplies, the Cleveland Clinic Twinsburg Family Health and Surgery Center and University Hospitals.
