City hopes to be in new office by March 4

Hudson -- The countdown to new office space for city departments has begun, with doors anticipated to open March 4 at the new location -- 115 Executive Parkway, Suite 400.

Council approved the move Jan. 16 with a three-year lease agreement with Jacklin Properties LLC for 11,283 square feet of space.

The city plans to initially move three departments -- information systems, community development and engineering -- out of the Evaporator Works complex at 51 S. Main St. and 46 Ravenna St. and into the new site Feb. 25.

Town Hall departments, including the city manager and finance department, and the Economic Development Director will move the following weekend, according to City Communications Manager Jody Roberts.

The city pays $81,000 per year for the space at the Evaporator Works, $10,438 per year for the First & Main Space for the economic development department, and $3,000 for storage fees, Roberts said. The new space will consolidate those three locations for approximately $83,000 per year.

The first year will include at least an additional $20,000 to $50,000 for moving costs and renovations to the lobby, Roberts said.

Executive Parkway is in west Hudson off Boston Mills Road. It is about a half mile east of the Boston Heights border and just south of the Ohio Turnpike.

The reception area in the new building will have to be renovated at the new location to create windows for utility billing and community development inquiries, Roberts said.

The consolidated space will allow savings on duplication of equipment, services and networks, Roberts said.

"It's not as much about savings as it is about functioning as a group," she said. "We'll be close to each other and have those water cooler conversations."

City officials have discussed combining office space for years. Other departments, like public works and Hudson Public Power, could eventually be brought under the same roof, Roberts said. The three-year lease gives the city time to investigate what would work.

Once the move is complete, Council can concentrate on what public uses Town Hall can be utilized for, Roberts said.

Council members suggested using Town Hall to host office hours with residents. The city could also allow organizations and groups to use the space, Roberts said.
