Jury selection begins in Akron townhome slayings

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Jury selection is continuing in the death-penalty trial of the second defendant in a northeast Ohio quadruple homicide last year.

Individual questioning of jurors is expected to start Thursday morning in Akron in the aggravated-murder trial of 22-Deshanon Jammal Haywood. He is accused in the fatal shootings of two men and two women in an Akron townhome in April 2013.

The Akron Beacon Journal  reports that a group of 162 potential jurors had gathered for general questioning Wednesday at the Summit County Courthouse.

The trial was delayed when prosecutors claimed judicial bias, leading the presiding judge to voluntarily step aside from the case in July.

Haywood’s co-defendant, 23-year-old Derrick Anthony Brantley, was convicted at trial and sentenced to four life prison terms.

Prosecutors say the slayings were drug related.
