The annual Run for the Orphans is April 13 at 8:30 a.m. at Seton Catholic School, 6923 Stow Road. There will be a 5K main event and a 1 mile kids run to benefit the orphans of the Ubumi Transit Home in Zambia.
In 2009, at the request of 2,600 Hudson school children, Hudson City Council agreed to "adopt" the Ubumi Transit Home as a testament to the global concerns of its citizens. Children of Ubumi partners with Ubumi Africa, a Zambian non governmental organization for the care of AIDS orphans and other vulnerable children.
According to a Children of Ubumi spokesperson, the national attention recently focused on a small boy held hostage in an underground bunker is testimony to every parent's fear that their child will be in danger while they stand helpless. Likewise every child harbors the deep seated fear of losing a parent. For 132 million children world-wide the loss of one or both parents is a grim reality. In Zambia alone, one child in every six is an orphan.
