The Cuyahoga Valley Art Center (CVAC) hosted their first of a series of monthly Northeast Ohio Rocks! painting parties in January.
Northeast Ohio Rocks! is a viral group based on Facebook whose intention is to create and distribute hand painted rocks throughout the community. The intention is to brighten the day of the person who discovered its hiding spot. They currently have over 32,000 members, a number which is growing daily. Thus, if you have discovered a hand sized painted rock hidden somewhere unexpected then congratulations. You have discovered a trinket that was meant to brighten your day.
CVAC provided the supplies necessary to participate; including the paints, brushes and labels that participants were to adhere to the rock at home after it had dried. The event was held in the main gallery and classroom space. The wintery theme of the event correlated with the 7th Annual Snow Show currently on display at CVAC. Clipart and sample rocks from the group’s page provided inspiration but participants were welcome to imagine a scene of their own.
Participants spoke warmly of the experience. Annie Fry, a longtime member of CVAC and a volunteer for the event, stated that “the night was so much fun! The children were delightful. It was a great evening”. Others expressed how much they appreciated the ease and convenience of working in a space designed to welcome kids’ messy creativity. Even so, brown paper lining the tables allowed for a quick clean-up and a hairdryer for even quicker drying; collectively creating a much easier experience than what might be found at the kitchen table at home.
As promised to those who came and requested another, Cuyahoga Valley Art Center will host a Northeast Ohio Rocks! Painting Party each month in 2017, with the next being Feb. 24 from 5 to 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Participants are asked to register via Eventbrite since space is limited but those with last minute changes in plans are still more than welcome to join.
