Akron, OH – The Akron Symphony Orchestra is pleased to welcome Marie Bucoy-Calavan as the Akron Symphony Chorus Director. Bucoy-Calavan succeeds Maria Sensi Sellner, who stepped down at the close of the 2015-2016 season.
“Taking on this duty as Akron Symphony Chorus Director not only grants me the opportunity to personally grow and learn,” says Bucoy-Calavan, “but also allows me to continue what I feel I have been called to do: make music and elevate its priority in the community.” Bucoy-Calavan will prepare the Akron Symphony Chorus for four performances with the Akron Symphony and conduct one stand-alone chorus concert in the 2016-2017 season. Choral highlights of the season include Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and Mendelssohn’s Elijah.
Bucoy-Calavan has conducted a diverse range of ensembles, from primary and secondary school choirs, to community, collegiate, and professional choruses, as well as opera productions. She completed her Bachelor of Arts in Music and Master of Music in Choral Conducting at California State University, Fullerton, serving as the Graduate Assistant Conductor of both the University Singers and Chamber Choir, under the direction and mentorship of Dr. Robert Istad. She has prepared and performed with symphonic choruses under the batons of Carl St. Clair, Bramwell Tovey, John Williams, and Eric Whitacre in distinguished venues, including Walt Disney Concert Hall, Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, and the Liszt Academy in Budapest, Hungary. Bucoy-Calavan placed second in the 2013 American Choral Directors Association National Choral Conducting Competition, held in Dallas, Texas. She completed her Doctorate of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting at University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where she directed the University of Cincinnati Men’s Chorus. She serves on the National Board of Directors of Chorus America and as University Repertoire and Standards Chair of the state organization, Ohio Choral Directors Organization. In addition to her new role, Bucoy-Calavan will continue her work as Artistic Director of Summit Choral Society and Director of Choral Studies at the University of Akron.
“Marie brings a number of strengths that no one else can,” says Christopher Wilkins, Music Director for the Akron Symphony. “She is already deeply involved in the community and she knows the choral scene in Akron as well as anyone. Most importantly, she’s a terrific choral director, as her successes at the University of Akron and with the Summit Choral Society have clearly shown. I am thrilled about the direction we are headed and look forward to a fabulous season of music.”
“This is a great time for choral music in Akron,” says Karen Prasser, Executive Director at Summit Choral Society. “We are thrilled for Marie and the Akron Symphony Chorus. I am certain that the singers will be inspired by her outstanding talents and leadership.”
