Hudson Community Youth Chorus begins inaugural season

Published:

Young singers from across the area have a new opportunity to stretch their vocal techniques with the new Hudson Community Youth Chorus. Under the sponsorship of the Hudson Community Chorus, its youth chorus is open to students in grades five through 12. The group directed by Eve Sliwinski, will begin rehearsals on Sept. 8, at Christ Church Episcopal, 21 Aurora St., Hudson. Rehearsals will be each Monday from 6 to 7:15 p.m.

The chorus, formed in the English tradition of choral music, is for treble voices -- girls and boys with unchanged voices. It provides an opportunity for students to begin or supplement their choral experience through training in vocal technique and learning the joy of singing with others. The Hudson Community Youth Chorus will perform with the Hudson Community Chorus in holiday and spring concerts and will also participate in outreach events in the area.

Sliwinski has extensive experience in directing children's choirs in the Hudson area and has taught choral music throughout the United States.  In Hudson, she was the Director of Music at First Congregational Church from 2005-2010 until moving abroad.

A graduate of Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver, she earned a Master's Degree in Music Education with an emphasis in choral music at Edinboro University, Pennsylvania.  She has completed post graduate work at Westminster Choir College, Towson State University, and has studied with René Clausen, Anton Armstrong and Craig Arnold at Concordia College. She is past president of the Northeast Ohio Chapter of Choristers Guild. She is also a former member of the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus and Sloane Square Choral Society, London, England. She has studied the music education philosophies of Carl Orff and Zoltan Kodaly and attended the British Kodaly Academy's Spring course in northern England in April 2014.

The Hudson Community Chorus, which begins its 27th season Sept. 9 under the direction of Nathan Duvuvuei, agreed to sponsor the youth chorus as part of its ongoing mission of sharing, preserving and advancing the art of choral music in Northeast Ohio.

Students interested in joining the new youth chorus are invited to schedule a voice placement assessment on either Aug. 18 or Aug. 25 by emailing the director at directorhcyc@gmail.com. Assessments are 5 to 10 minutes long and will be from 4 to 6 p.m. at Christ Church Episcopal. No preparation is required for vocal assessments. Cost for chorus membership is $65 per semester.
