When the athletes and their families and friends come to Northeast Ohio for the 2014 Gay Games, co-artistic director Neil Thackaberry said that Actors' Summit will aim to give them a cultural option.
The theater will bring back "My Mother's Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding" for eight shows from Aug. 7 through Aug. 17. Actors' Summit staged the show 18 months ago as its holiday show in 2012.
"We thought it would be a great opportunity for the groups coming into town," Thackaberry said.
Most of the cast who appeared in the 2012 production will be returning for the limited run show in August, Thackaberry said. The play will essentially be the same, although the song, The History of Gay Marriage, has been updated by playwrights David Hein and Irene Sankoff. The play's story is based on Hein's own mother and his life.
"That will be the biggest challenge," Thackaberry said of the changes to the song, which chronicles the progress and setbacks with same-sex marriage. "So much has changed since the 18 months we last staged it."
The play includes two romances and two weddings, Thackaberry said.
"It's one of those shows where it keeps going and going," he said. "There's a lot going on."
Shows are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. Ticket prices range from $10 to $33. For information on Actors' Summit, call 330-374-7568 or visit www.actorssumit.org.
"We've already sold 25, 30 tickets today," Thackaberry said during the July 11 interview. "This is to our regular customers. I'm happy to be coming back to this show."
Actors' Summit Theatre is within Greystone Hall, 103 High St. in downtown Akron.
The Gay Games, which will have events both in Cleveland and Akron, will run Aug. 9 through 16. For details and a schedule of events, visit www.gg9cle.com.
