Akron, Ohio – The Akron RubberDucks and the City of Akron announced today they are teaming up for the first time to host Independence Day fireworks. It is the first time the Akron franchise will host a home game on the Fourth of July since it relocated to Canal Park in 1997.
The RubberDucks play the Bowie Bay Sox at 6:35 p.m. with the fireworks to follow at approximately 10:00 p.m.
The fireworks show, presented by FirstEnergy, will run for 15 minutes, the longest show on Independence Day in Akron in more than five years since they used to be fired off above the downtown Innerbelt portion of State Route 59.
"We're excited about hosting a home game for the first time on the Fourth of July and look forward to working with the City of Akron to build this into a tradition we'd love to continue for years to come," said Akron RubberDucks General Manager Jim Pfander. "There's nothing more American than baseball and fireworks on Independence Day, and we hope fans will celebrate with the rest of the city to make it a memorable night of family fun."
This season, Akron fans have made Canal Park the home of affordable, family fun. The June 13-15 weekend brought 22,681 fans to see the RubberDucks and there has been 157,055 visitors through 32 openings, a 36 percent increase over 2013, when 100,484 fans came to Canal Park during the same timeframe.
"We are happy to team up with the RubberDucks for another family friendly event," said Mayor Don Plusquellic. "I hope our citizens take advantage of the combined fireworks show and this evening becomes a lasting tradition for their families."
