Akron, Ohio - Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens explores the travels of the Seiberling family during An Influencal Journey, the year long theme for the 2014 season.
Highlights of the season include the display of an extraordinary 16-ft. model of the early 20th century ocean liner, the "RMS Lusitania" and the opening in May of Playgarden, a new interactive garden for multi-generational families.
Stan Hywet is also adding a second car show to its roster of events with the inaugural year of Concours of d'Elegance, a gathering of rare, vintage automobiles, complemented by an activity-filled lifestyle showcase, September 19-21.
Currently closed for cleaning and restoration, Stan Hywet opens for the
2014 season on April 1; opening weekend of April 4-6 features Inspiration in Bloom, a fresh floral display in the Manor House.
The season extends to January 3, 2015 to present a final holiday weekend of Deck the Hall. Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens is located at 714 North Portage Path in Akron, Ohio.
Season-long exhibits bring travel into focus. In the Manor House, The Family Story of Travel details every aspect of an excursion in the
early 20th century -from planning to the actual journey. The exhibit
features a scale model of the "RMS Lusitania," on loan from the American Visionary Art Museum. Created out of 193,000 toothpicks by artist Wayne Kusy, this extraordinary model will be on display in the Great Hall.
USA Getaways in the Corbin Conservatory explores the Seiberling family's trips to their cabin, Cedar Lodge, in Hessel, Michigan. Returning events that are a tradition for many include FOUNDERS' DAY (June 6-8), the Father's Day Car show June 15, Ohio Mart Oct. 2-5 and Deck the Hall1. Antique fire apparatus and celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Mustang are highlights of the Father's Day Car Show.
"The Seiberlings loved to travel for pleasure and to get ideas and
inspiration for building Stan Hywet. They visited destinations out West,
as well as cities and castles in Europe and particularly in England.
Getting ready for these trips involved a great deal of preparation and
planning. We'll share stories of their experiences as we explore 'An
Influential Journey' in 2014," said Linda Conrad, President and
Executive Director at Stan Hywet.
Inspiration in Bloom, a spectacular showcase of fresh flowers throughout the Manor House, opens the 2014 season. Displays and arrangement are donated by local floral designers and garden clubs who use the elements of the Manor House collection as a guide to their creations. "This is a beautiful and appealing way to announce that spring has arrived at Stan Hywet," notes Kim Sorboro, Collections Manager. A fall showcase of flowers takes place during Ohio Mart, Oct. 3-6.
The 5,000 sq. ft. Playgarden opens in May and is designed to engage
multi-generational families. With features that will challenge the
imagination, this interactive garden includes six different experiences
inspired by characteristics of the Estate. Guests may climb the 15 ft.
