COLLINWOOD, OH – Spring has sprung and Collinwood is taking advantage of the change in season with its upcoming free events in April. Through the generous support of The Kresge Foundation and Cuyahoga Arts and Culture, The Collinwood’s Rising Vibrancy Program will provide four free events celebrating the Earth and art throughout the month of April. The Collinwood Rising Vibrancy Program is supported in part by the residents of Cuyahoga County through a public grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.
The first scheduled April event is Callaloo Carnival, taking place on Friday, April 4 from 6-11 pm at Callaloo Café and Bar, 15601 Waterloo Road. Callaloo Café and Bar will host a Trinibagonian style carnival party. The special menu will include curried goat and stewed pork. To keep tradition, everyone is encouraged to wear carnival-style costumes and masks. Even the bar, wait staff and entertainment will be dressing up for the occasion. Artists form the Cleveland Museum of Art will lead guests in decorating and creating their own masks to wear for the party! There will be live musical performances from Albert Dennis from 6-8pm and Dan Bode and Moko Bovo from 8-11pm.
Next up on Saturday, April 19 is a full day of events that will keep Waterloo hopping. The first event is an Earth Day Celebration in the Waterloo Sculpture Garden,16010 Waterloo Road, from 11 am to 6 pm. This free outdoor event will feature a special unveiling of a new bike rack that will be permanently installed on the corner of 160th. It will be installed in the garden for public use. Visitors will enjoy BBQ and a musical guest DJ and are encouraged to watch the demonstrations on drain stenciling, planting of native plants and the installation of a rain barrel.
“We want to bring more awareness of the district’s green efforts by marking storm drains throughout the community and beautify the street by adding planters outside of local businesses,” said Omid Tavakoli. “This is a great way to accomplish that goal, while also getting the community involved.”
Guests will also be able to venture down to Blue Arrow Records for their event from 11 am - 7 pm. The Blue Arrow Stage Mural Project will commemorate National Record Store Day 2014 by unveiling a new mural to be painted by renowned Cleveland artist Jake Kelly.
