'Chickadee Sunday' offers hands-on opportunity for Metro Parks visitors

Published:

Thousands of visitors have experienced the thrill of feeding black-capped chickadees by hand in the Metro Parks.

Join Naturalist Danette Rushboldt to celebrate National Bird Feeding Month by hand feeding chickadees, Sunday, February 9 at 1 p.m., at F.A. Seiberling Nature Realm, 1828 Smith Rd., Akron. This free program begins with an entertaining and informative program inside, then moves outside to feed. Seed will be provided.

“We’ll use black oil sunflower seed due to its high fat and calorie content,” said Rushboldt. “The chickadees will benefit from an extra energy source, especially during this winter’s bitterly cold weather.”

In addition to this special program, park visitors can feed chickadees throughout the year during regular park hours. Seed packets are available in the Nature Realm gift shop for $0.50, or visitors can bring their own. Bacteria and mold will grow on seed left on the ground, so please discard unused seed in the bins provided.
