Amazing scenery and effects? Also check.

"Wicked" has all of the above, plus an incredible cast to bring the story of Oz's two witches to life. The Dec. 5 audience gave the cast a standing ovation at the end.

The musical, based on the novel of the same name by Gregory Maguire, has returned to PlayhouseSquare's State Theatre, with performances through Jan. 5. Tickets are currently on sale at the PlayhouseSquare ticket office, online at www.playhousesquare.org or by calling 216-241-6000. Due to the holidays, performance days and times vary; check www.playhousesquare.org for the most up to date performance schedule.

There's a lot to enjoy in this musical, from its wonderful songs like "Defying Gravity" and "Popular," to the spectacular costumes and sets and, of course, the terrific story. In case you already aren't familiar with the plot, "Wicked" follows the lives of the honest and principled Elphaba (aka The Witch of the West) and her unlikely friendship with the popular and ambitious Galinda (later Glinda) during their school years. The whole cast was strong, but Jennifer DiNoia's performance as Elphaba is nothing short of amazing.

Show lottery

A day-of-performance lottery for a limited number of orchestra seats is available for "Wicked." 2 1/2 hours prior to each performance, people who present themselves at the PlayhouseSquare ticket office will have their names placed in a lottery drum; 30 minutes later, names will be drawn for a limited number of orchestra seats at $25 each, cash only. This lottery is available only in-person at the box office, with a limit of two tickets per person. Lottery participants must have a valid photo ID when submitting their entry form and, if chosen, when purchasing tickets.
