Collinwood, OH – A Caribbean Christmas? A hot chocolate happy hour? This is just a sample of the variety of events the Waterloo Arts District is providing to the community for FREE this December! Thanks to a $1 million grant from the Kresge Foundation, the Waterloo Arts & Entertainment District will be providing a variety of free community events during the city’s yearlong streetscape project.
The first event, “A Caribbean Christmas,” is sponsored by the Callaloo Café and Bar. Starting on December 2nd, Jesse Rhinehart, a Cleveland based artist, paint a mural on the wall of the Café, located at 15601 Waterloo Rd.
Rhinehart has been featured on the walls of the Café before, with his watercolor paintings of the Caribbean. Previously, Rhinehart has created six murals around the Cleveland area, including paintings in the Club Lounge at Jacobs Field. The mural will be unveiled at the Caribbean Christmas event on December 20th, which runs from 6:00pm to 11:00pm. The event will also feature the Panic Steel Ensemble, a Caribbean steel drums band that will perform throughout the evening.
“Currently, the Café spotlights artwork by Cleveland area artists. A mural, painted by one of Cleveland’s finest muralists will be an incentive for other area businesses to follow this concept and carry the Waterloo Arts initiative of large scale exterior murals throughout the Waterloo Arts district into area business interiors” said owner Kelvin Cadiz. “A vibrant Mural tour of the area can be developed and promoted, inviting visitors to the area to explore not just the exterior murals, but to come inside and visit the various businesses to continue their mural tour.”
The second event “Cocoa in the Courtyard,” will feature a hot chocolate happy hour and a mural unveiling by local artist Linda Zolten Wood on Friday, December 6th. The event will be at the small courtyard of the Zaller Building at 16006 Waterloo (area facing on E. 160th St.) Two events will be hosted, one from 12:00pm-1:30pm, and another from 5:30pm-7:00pm. Attendees will receive free locally roasted coffee from Solstice, cocoa, snacks from local chef Kimberly Homan, free takeaways, and musical entertainment.
“This is a great way to help launch the holiday season in Waterloo,” said Sarah Gyorki, of SKG Consulting/Zaller Arts Building. “The goal with the Cocoa in the Courtyard event is to animate a neglected, underutilized space and bring art and energy to it. We really want to bring out a new audience in a new way and share the rich history of the Zaller arts building. This building is a special part of the district’s history and hosts a variety of creative enterprises. It will be nice to create something beautiful on the building, and host an event around the celebration and unveiling.”
