The members of the Stow-Munroe Falls Lions Club are preparing for their seventh annual Paw Fest, scheduled for Sept. 15 at Bow Wow Beach Dog Park in collaboration with the city of Stow. The park is located at 5027 Stow Road, Stow.
This year's event is being dedicated to the "Therapy Dogs" who visit the many hospitals, nursing homes and other facilities to bring joy and comfort to their residents.
Paw Fest 2013 is a free event beginning at 10 a.m. and ending at 4 p.m. Parking will be available for $1 or a donation of used eyeglasses -- one of the many eye care projects the Lions club maintains throughout the year.
Last year's Paw Fest was attended by more than 2,200 visitors. And as in previous years, the event will feature rescue groups, vendors, dog training exercises/exhibits, speakers, dog contests, a 50/50 drawing and a gift raffle throughout the day. New this year as a special treat for the kids will be ORBIT, the mascot of the Akron Aeros, who is scheduled to appear from 1 to 2 p.m. Guardians Advocating Child Safety & Protection (GASP) will be on site all day for ID files of fingerprints, etc. Among food available will be Swenson's Food Truck; Handel's Ice Cream; Papa John's Pizza; 'Lil Grandpa's Kettle Corn and more. Proceeds from this popular Lions Club's fundraiser benefits many community projects and Lions eye care foundations, in addition to aiding those individuals with impaired vision through eye exams, glasses and assistance dogs. A new project this past year gave the Lions an opportunity to help the local schools with eye exams and "safety buckets," while also continuing their support by volunteering at the American Red Cross' blood drives.
Vendors and rescue groups who would like to be a part of this fundraiser should contact the chairman, Lion Marty Dennis at Duhstoy2@aol.com or 330-607-2242. The club's web site is smflions.com.
