Their job is working at an institution that highlights a variety of artwork. It should be no surprise that many staff members of the Akron Art Museum are themselves artists.
The artistry of more than a dozen staff members at the Akron Art Museum can be seen at Summit Artspace through Sept. 15. Their creations include painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, digital drawing and installations.
"We knew a lot of people with the museum were artists," said Sandy Kreisman, director of Summit Artspace. "They were so excited because they have never had this opportunity to do this before. It's a beautiful show. There were staff people who hadn't done art in a while."
Participating staff members include: Toni Billick, Stephanie Brewer, Justin Campbell, Laura Firestone, Maria Iafelice, Melissa Markwald, Bridget O'Donnell, Emma Pavlik, Melissa Roth, Emily Sullivan, Joseph Kolliner, Alex Strader, Chris Ross, Joseph Walton, Nicole Schneider and Arnold Tunstall. Ellen Rudolph, senior curator at the museum, assisted with curating the exhibition.
"We've been talking about this for about five years," said Tunstall, a former Cuyahoga Falls resident and collections manager for the Akron Art Museum. "We originally thought of doing this for ourselves, displaying out work in a boardroom, not in the public. It's so much better in public. We have some wonderful pieces done by recent graduates. They stand around guarding the art or installing the art. It's nice to see their work."
Tunstall said that the museum employees came from several departments, from the guards and those working the front desk to the museum's store.
