William Baughman, son of Dennis and Jennifer Baughman of Hudson, was the first-place winner in the junior high division of the Buckeye Piano Competition for the Ohio Music Teacher's Association Middle East District at Kent State University April 29. He will be representing the district at Malone University June 10, competing against other district winners from throughout the state.
He has had numerous superior ratings in National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festivals, playing piano solos, concertos, and duets. A ninth-grade honor student, Baughman is the pianist for Jazz II and sings in the chamber choir at Hudson High School. In addition to his classical studies, Baughman plays piano and sings in his family band Bandyku. They have performed locally in a variety of settings, including the annual "Docs Who Rock"fundraiser at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall in Akron.
Wendell Wu was the first-place winner in the senior high division of the same Buckeye Piano Competition, and will also be competing against other district winners in his age group June 10. Wendell was selected to perform in honors recitals and master classes at the Young Artist World Piano Festival in St. Paul, Minn. in 2015 and 2016, and will be attending the festival again in July. He has had numerous superior ratings in NFMC Junior Festivals, playing piano solos, concertos, and duets. He also plays viola in the Hudson High School Chamber Orchestra and is on the Hudson High School tennis team.
In June Wendell will be attending the Yale Young Global Scholars Program, called Frontiers of Math and Science. Wendell is a 10th-grade honor student at Hudson High School, the son of Helena Liu and Ting Wu.
Jason Zhang, son of Yijing Chen and Howard Zhang, received an honorable mention in the junior high division; and Angela Liu, daughter of Shuling Nie and Qin Liu also had an honorable mention in the senior high division of this competition. All four students study piano with Nancy Bachus, also of Hudson.
