SAGAMORE HILLS More than 1,000 are expected to attend a 5K race in Sagamore Hills Park to benefit 6-year-old Tessa Puma, who has been undergoing surgeries since early April including a lower left leg amputation due to a rare infection.
Former NFL player and three-time superbowl winner Je'Rod Cherry will be hosting the event.
Registration will open at 8 a.m. and at 8:45 a.m. a pre-race stretch will be led by Namaste Studio. The race is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. The first five men, five women and five children to cross the finish line will receive a gift card. An after-race snack bag and beverage will be provided for racers. Runners are encouraged to wear pink, Tessa's favorite color.
In addition to the race, there will be a variety of raffle baskets from a Nordonia Knights spirit wear basket to a two night stay at the Cleveland Hilton and tickets to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as well as a 50/50 raffle and a bake sale. Attendees can also enjoy touch-a-truck with the fire department, Home Depot workshops, face painting, blow up slide, appearances from the Super Hero Charity, and much more. Shuttles will be available from Rushwood Elementary to assist with parking/traffic flow.
A group of Nordonia Hills community members, led by Jennifer Stalzer, organized the fundraiser for the Puma family. There will be no special bibs for runners as 100 percent of the funds raised are being donated directly to the Pumas.
Tessa is a Northfield Elementary Kindergartner who was born to dance. Tessa, the youngest to ever make the Center Stage competitive dance team, is known for her big bows and huge smile. Tessa recently had to have her left leg amputated from the knee down because of a rare condition called necrotizing fasciitis. The condition was caused when bacteria from strep throat infection got into her bloodstream and spread.
