Akron Zoo provides opportunities for teens to get involved
AKRON The Akron Zoo is looking for teen volunteers that are interested in animals and conservation for their Junior Interpreter program for the 2017 season. The program runs from Memorial Day Labor Day and the Junior Interpreters assist the zoo's Education Department with various activities.
The program, in its tenth year, is for teens, ages 14-18 years old and entering the ninth through 12th grades in the fall of 2017. Junior Interpreters are required to contribute a total of three days per week during the summer and some weekends during school. No formal training or background in education or work experience is required. Students must demonstrate a willingness to learn about animals and conservation and have good communication and customer service skills. Duties include assisting with ZooCamp, birthday parties, animal show, special events and more.
Interested teens must fill out an application and submit two letters of recommendation, along with an essay and references by April 7 to be considered. Teens will then have to go through an interview process. If chosen there is a $100 participation fee and teens will get a shirt, name tag, water bottle, supplies and more. In its nine years, 231 teens have volunteered with the Junior Interpreters program, contributing over 39,500 hours to the Akron Zoo.
