Hudson is proud to take part in Global Entrepreneurship Week, Nov. 14 - 20.
GEW is the world's largest celebration of the innovators and job creators who launch startups that bring ideas to life, drive economic growth and expand human welfare. Leading up to that week, the Hudson Hub-Times is featuring the story of one of our own Hudson entrepreneurs each week.
Our first feature celebrates A&B Roofing, owned by Hudson resident Billy Buehl. In 1980 Billy was working for a small construction company as their "gutter man." When the company's owner told him he did not have what it took to be a partner, Billy struck out on his own and founded A&B Gutters. After hiring an out-of-work roofer to assist him he decided to expand into siding and roofing, and A&B Roofing was born.
Billy says "my biggest challenge was to learn all the ins and outs of the business - insurance, workers comp, the legal aspects, payroll, etc. Too many hats for one person to wear - thank heavens I had my mom, my wife Kelly and family friend Lisa to help. Mom and Dad still come in to check on me on a regular basis. Hard to pick one 'most rewarding' thing - I love what I do. Still give a fist pump every time I sell a job, no matter the size. And when I walk away leaving a satisfied customer at the end of a job, that's what owning a business is all about.
"My typical day starts with getting our crews off to the homes and businesses we are working on. I then head out to inspect and evaluate other potential projects - usually visit three to five projects for estimates and two to four we are working on. Around 5 p.m. I start to type up the estimates I measured that day.
"My favorite part of being an entrepreneur? The pride I can take in the integrity of our company and a staff that cares about our customers. I would advise budding entrepreneurs to work hard and be honest and fair. You are the business in the beginning. If you treat it like a job, it will be just that. Treat it like your life and your baby and it will grow and make you proud.
One word to describe Beuhl's life as an entrepreneur: "rewarding."
