August is an exciting month at Hudson Farmers Market. The main feature of the month will be the market's signature event, the annual Tomato Festival. The main feature of the festival is a tomato judging contest, in which local home gardeners are invited to participate.
On Aug. 9, Hudson Farmers Market invites market visitors to ride to the market to celebrate Bike Day. Eddy's Bike Shop will be on hand to offer free bike checks. Safe Routes Hudson will provide information for those planning to make their way to school by bike in the fall.
Also on Aug. 9, Renata Fossen Brown, vice president of education at the Cleveland Botanical Garden, will demonstrate how to make a "salsa garden" from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Kids will decorate the outside of a flower pot and then plant a tomato plant, a pepper plant and cilantro in the pot. The lesson comes with a salsa recipe.
Brown is the author of "Gardening Lab for Kids: 52 Fun Experiments to Learn, Grow, Harvest, Make, Play and Enjoy Your Garden." The book is available at the Learned Owl Book Shop and will be available at the Market on Aug. 9.
Summit County Master Gardeners will visit the market on Aug. 16 to answer gardening questions.
The Tomato Festival on Aug. 23 will feature a cooking demonstration and plenty of facts and tips about cooking with tomatoes. Local celebrities will judge the best home grown tomatoes and the best tomatoes from our market vendors. Since "tomato" will be the word of the day, look for taste samples and special items from vendors that contain tomatoes.
Nikki and Patrick Custy will provide lively music to add to the festivities of the day. Market hours will be extended in the afternoon until 1:30 p.m. to allow art lovers to enjoy Art on the Green and still have time to visit the market.
Aug. 30 will be Wellness Day at Hudson Farmers Market. Organizations concerned with health and wellness can still contact the market manager and sign up to share information about their services with market visitors.
