Locals smitten by Love Bugs baked goods

One whiff and she's got you.

The Love Bugs Bakery, 46 Ravenna St., Suite D1, has a lot going for it, particularly the wonderful aroma as you step inside the door.

"Everything is homemade with high grade ingredients," said Love Bugs Bakery owner / operator Brenda Daugherty.

Daugherty is yet another in a string of local business owners who have made the switch from the corporate world to small business operations. She is a former corporate accountant.

But she comes to the bakery world well equipped and educated.

For 15 years she worked as a Wilton instructor and has learned from some of the best bakers in the United States. In July she plans to pass on some of those cake and cupcake decorating skills with classes for adults and children in her new bakery.

In addition to her new shop, Daugherty is in demand as a special events cakemaker. Her specialty is sculptured cakes (for instance a piano, SpongeBob, a cat).

Although she just opened her doors six weeks ago, she has already developed a loyal clientele.

"My strawberry bread is a big hit," she said. "My chocolate chip cookies are a big hit, too. I can sell 10 to 20 dozen a day. Mine stay nice and soft," she revealed.

Got a particular soft spot for baked goods? She's got the bases covered with a variety of breads, cupcakes, cookies, cream puffs, cinnamon rolls and a scrumptious looking dessert bar with chocolate, cream and coconut.

"I also do cupcake parties," she said.

The bakery name honors Daughterty's two daughters: Kiera, 9, and Ciara, 11. She calls them her love bugs.

The bakery is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays by appointment only.
