Hudson -- A new family friendly restaurant, Johnny's Diner, has opened its doors at 180 W. Streetsboro St. in the Hudson Plaza (also known as the Acme Plaza).
"I just thought there was a need in Hudson for a family style diner," said owner/operator John Tomasulo.
Tomasulo, who learned many of his skills at the Saranac Culinary Arts school in New York, brings decades of experience to his newest venture. He was a sous chef at Caesar's Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City and, more recently, owned his own restaurant for 15 years in New Jersey with his wife, Michelle. He has also been general manager for fast food restaurants.
The Tomasulos have four children: Angela, 22; Sarah, 18; Anna, 13; and Nicholas, 12. All of them will be helping out at Johnny's Diner at various times, according to Michelle.
A varied menu is offered at the diner, including John's specialties, homemade soups and chili. You can buy the soups and chili to go, by the quart, for $5.
"He really is a great soup maker. They're very flavorful," Michelle said. "I'm the baker. I make an awesome cheesecake and carrot cake."
Two menu items offered at Johnny's Diner are straight from the East Coast, according to Michelle. Taylor Ham and Sloppy Joes -- but not your standard Ohio sloppy Joes.
"These Sloppy Joes are a cold turkey sandwich," Michelle said.
John, 52, describes the diner as a sit-down 50s retro dinner and he's ready to sit you down and serve you with some memorable food including Mom's Old-Fashioned Meatloaf, overstuffed deli sandwiches and big John's Breakfast Skillets.
As added incentives, breakfast is served all day and a kid's menu also is offered.
The diner is open Mondays through Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
