The Hair Specialists collection donations for Battered Women's Shelter

The Hair Specialists salon, 180 W. Streetsboro St., is hosting a Giving Tree to collect holiday donations for the Summit County Battered Women's Shelter.

People can donate gift cards, cash, household items such as cleaning supplies, paper products and small kitchen appliances. Also accepted are baby care items, bathroom items or personal care items. A complete list of needed items is available at the Hair Specialists salon.

The mission of the Battered Women's Shelter is to lead the community in the prevention of domestic abuse by providing emergency shelter, advocacy and education throughout Summit and Medina counties, in an effort to break the cycle of abuse and help promote peace in every family.

Domestic violence affects one in every four women. It is estimated that 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year and females who are 20-24 years of age are at the greatest risk for intimate partner violence. 95 percent of men who physically abuse their partners also psychologically abuse them.

Unfortunately, approximately one-quarter of all physical assaults, one-fifth of all rapes, and one-half of all stalkings perpetrated against females by intimate partners are reported to police.

Donations will be accepted until Dec. 19.
