Akron, OH – The Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank is hosting Operation Orange, the first 24-hour volunteer event in celebration of Hunger Action Month, this Sept. 29 at 4 P.M. to Sept. 30 at 4 P.M. Throughout the night, volunteers will commit to 2-4 hour shifts to keep projects running for 24 hours straight. Volunteers will be assisting the Foodbank in an assortment of projects to keep up with the growing demand for emergency food.
By participating in Operation Orange, the final event of Hunger Action Month, community members will help raise awareness for the 1 in 7 who experience food insecurity locally, and become involved in making a tangible difference in the fight to end hunger.
Volunteers will be working in the Foodbank’s 85,000 sq. ft. warehouse and planned projects include: sorting fresh produce like apples and potatoes, labeling cans, sorting a variety of meat, and dispensing soap.
“Food distribution to our member agencies has increased nearly 25% compared to total distribution last year at this time,” said Dan Flowers, President and CEO of the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. “The need is real in Northeast Ohio, and volunteers are a critical piece of how we get food to people who need it most. Operation Orange is your way to become involved!”
The Foodbank plans to host more than 100 volunteers every hour during Operation Orange. Live DJ’s from Celebration in Sound will be at the Foodbank for 24 hours, along with an array of food and refreshments from Operation Orange event sponsors: Papa John’s Pizza, Ivan’s Deli sponsored by Mimi Vanderhaven, Marco’s Pizza, Chipotle and coffee donated by Starbucks.
