The Run for the Orphans, scheduled for April 13, is offering a family package to encourage runners to make this run a family event. The entire family can sign up for $65. "This is a great way to make family memories, " says Nick Villanti, run organizer. "When we remember that the children we are supporting don't have happy family memories, it makes the chance to participate in the run as a family all the more poignant." Runners can register online at Active.com (keywords Hudson run for the orphans), or at Seton School on the day of the race.
Before and after the run, there will be an opportunity to write a note to the children at the Ubumi Transit Home as these children speak English in addition to their native Bemba. After the race, the orphans are sent any remaining shirts, and the notes from the runners. Pictures are also welcome. Claire Frese, who spent a year at the orphanage in 2005-2006, reported that the children pasted the pictures of donors to the headboards or footboards of their beds as a reminder that there were people in the world who cared about them.
Family sponsorships are also available for those who do not wish to run.
The child's sponsor will appear below the orphan's pictures which are posted along the course. Family sponsors may write a note and send a family picture to the child they are sponsoring. They will receive a picture of their sponsored child, and if possible a note back from him or her.
