Green Roots helps bone marrow donor search

Green Roots Collection, 41 Village Way in Hudson, will host a bone marrow donor registration drive Jan. 26 from noon to 6 p.m. for Shira, a New Jersey mother of three, diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in December 2010. Volunteer training, registration forms, and cheek swab kits for the drive are being provided by DKMS, the world's largest bone marrow donor center. With a worldwide donor registry of 3.4 million, more than 33,000 DKMS donors have helped save lives by donating their bone marrow, or peripheral blood stem cells.

With support provided by DKMS, numerous donor registration drives have taken place across the country to find a match for Shira. Although a donor for Shira has not yet been found, life savings matches have been found for five others suffering from blood cancers, because of registration drives held in Shira's name.

Green Roots is looking for volunteers to assist the day of the event, and encourages as many as are willing to register as a potential donor. The registration process, including a self administered cheek swab, is free. Educational materials regarding registering, ways to donate if you are a match, as well as opportunities to make monetary donations to DKMS will be provided at the registration drive.

Those interested in volunteering, or with questions about the registration drive, may call 330-655-2274, or email info@greenrootscollection.com or Kelly Taylor, donor recruitment coordinator, at Kelly@dkmsamericas.org.
