Historian and teacher Sam Thomas will be at the Learned Owl Book Shop, 204 N. Main St., Jan. 12 at 1 p.m. with his debut novel, "The Midwife's Tale." The historical mystery is set in 1644. In it, midwife Bridget Hodgson sets out to find out who killed the husband of her friend, Esther Cooper, who has been convicted of the crime and sentenced to be burnt alive.

Thomas has a Ph.D. in history with a focus on Reformation England and recently leaped from the tenure track into a teaching position at a secondary school near Cleveland.
