Free scenic train ride Nov. 12 Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad will offer a free train ride to honor veterans and their families on Nov. 12, through Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The train will depart from the Rockside Station, 7900 Old Rockside Road in Independence, at 1:30 p.m. for a three-hour excursion to Akron Northside Station and back. The free tickets will be available at the Rockside Station 45 minutes prior to departure, and will be awarded on a first-come, first served basis. No advanced tickets are available. All current military members, veterans and their families are invited. World War II veterans will be seated in the Premium Section. Wheelchair access is available, though limited. Akron Zoo offers free admission to veterans In recognition of Veterans Day, the Akron Zoo will be offering free admission to all military personnel and veterans Nov. 11 to 17. Veterans or people currently serving in the military will have to show a military ID to receive the discount. The Akron Zoo's winter hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and normal winter admission is $6 per person. Children under two are free and parking is $2. Great Clips gives free hair cuts to veterans Great Clips of Hudson will honor armed forces service people with a free hair service on Veterans' Day, Nov. 11. Any active duty or retired service person or reservist is eligible for this free offer. Great Clips of Hudson is open Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 330-653-3090. DAR hosts Veterans Day program Nov. 9 The David Hudson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will host a special program Nov. 9 at Laurel Lake Retirement Community honoring Veterans Day. Frank and Jen DeLorenzo, co-founders of Wags-4-Warriors, will demonstrate how man's best friends support men and women affected by their combat experiences. Regent Chris Winters will lead the opening ceremonies. The spouses, or special guests of members, are welcome to attend the program. In addition to collecting comfort items for veterans, members can also donate dog supplies (leashes, crates, collars or treats) for W4W. Stan Hywet offers free admission to veterans Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens is offering free admission to all veterans and military personnel who present their military ID and who visit on Veterans Day. Admission includes a self-guided tour of the 65-room Manor House, the Gate Lodge and Corbin Conservatory as well as access to the landscaped gardens and grounds. Accompanying family members pay regular prices. Stan Hywet is at 714 North Portage Path in Akron. Admission for self-guided Manor House tours is $14 for adults, and $6 for students ages 6 to 17.
