Ohio district focus of community schools forum

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Changes in one of Ohio's urban public school districts will be highlighted in a national gathering of advocates of community school approaches.

The Coalition for Community Schools National Forum is set for downtown Cincinnati this week. A Tuesday evening reception at the convention center focuses on Cincinnati Public Schools' development of environmentally friendly school buildings during its push to create community learning centers.

Site visits to Cincinnati schools are planned during the forum, and participants will hear from Cincinnati school leaders.

American Federation of Teachers president Randi Weingarten is also among the speakers this week.

Community schools advocates urge linking schools closely to their communities; integrating services, health, family support and child and community development.
