COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- A 27-year-old central Ohio man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after admitting that he fatally injured his girlfriend's 17-month-old daughter by throwing her onto a couch.

Joseph Fultz was sentenced Tuesday in Columbus after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter and child endangering in the death last May of Leah Sowards.

The Columbus Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1hh6G1D ) reports that Fultz told investigators he threw the toddler after she soiled her diaper, and she hit her head on the couch armrest.

The child's mother came to find the girl unresponsive. The child died from the brain injury three days later at a Columbus hospital.

Fultz apologized in court and said he's taking responsibility for his actions. His attorney called it a "tragic, momentary bad decision."
